A Priceless Life Lesson from Doris Gibbons, LUTCF, CPIW, CISR

As the owner of Gibbons Insurance Agency, I am looking forward to celebrating 25 years in the insurance industry as I had started my insurance career in February of 1993. I currently have an office in Harrison, OH and I am fully licensed in Ohio and Indiana for personal and commercial insurance needs.

I was thrilled to be named the Greater Harrison Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) Business of the Month this October, which will be presented at that Harrison City Council on November 8, 2017.  This was a welcome victory as I have had 5 surgeries in the past 5 months due to skin cancer. So, I want to share how important sun protection can be!

After confirming a light colored spot on my nose as skin cancer, I went to the skin cancer center to have this small spot removed on May 16, 2017. During what should have been a quick procedure, they discovered the cancer had grown under the skin’s surface and the roots went deep. As they continued to remove section by section, I lost a sizeable portion of the left side of my nose into my cheek. Immediately after they finished, I was shocked at the sudden and unexpected outcome. I was sent directly to a reconstructive plastic surgeon to begin the long process of rebuilding the nose and to start my healing.

Within two days, I had my first of several reconstructive surgeries with the MOHS Forehead Flap Surgery and was followed with additional surgeries to obtain skin graphs and to even remove cartridge from my ear that was needed to rebuild the nose. As a result, I had to cancel all summer plans, which included an all-paid Company trip to Atlantis, Bahamas that I had worked hard to earn through a company Campaign over the previous year.  This was a dream vacation for me and meant so much more as I had also earned this Company reward the previous year but also missed out on the trip to Greenbrier due to last year’s flooding that caused the trip to be cancelled.  While life can be unfair to us all at times, I’m happy to say that after going through multiple reconstructive surgeries, I am now cancer free! I really want people to remember the important of using sun protection every day and especially on little ones when most of the damage can takes its toll.

Being awarded the GHCC Business of the Month is a badge I am happy to wear as proof that even though I had extensive down time over the past six months for healing from these health issues, that I have still remained in the top three spots of my district life Campaign this entire year. I am proud of the continued service I have been able to offer my clients through my Agency and it is wonderful to be recognized for our efforts through these rough times.

I hope by sharing my story that others will learn to take care of their skin by using sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun. It is important to take these measures and to be regularly checked by a dermatologist. My story should stand as a warning of how quick things can change without notice. As an entrepreneur, I was fortunate enough to be able to adjust my own schedule and to rely on my well-trained staff even without knowing to prepare for this obstacle. So, now is a great time for everyone to think about how they would handle similar down time and to make sure they schedule their dermatologist appointment!
